Frequently Asked Questions
Jason and Kim went on a tour of South Africa in October 2022 and fell in love with all that South Africa has to offer. They want to experience it with all of their friends and loved ones. Jason and Kim promise this will be one of the best trips that you have ever been on.
Forget what you think you know about Africa. You will be completely safe and well taken care of throughout your trip. As Kim says, your South African experience will be “Africa for beginners.” When you land in Cape Town, the airport will be nicer than the airport you departed from and Cape Town will look and feel like a world class city with amenities and safety equivalent to any US city. You will be staying at luxury hotels and resorts with experienced staff that specialize in accommodating American and European visitors.
- Accommodations in Cape Town and the Wine Country will be provided by Jason and Kim. You will not be financially responsible for accommodations in Cape Town or the Wine Country (other than your incidentals and some food). In Cape Town, we have rooms booked at The Commodore Hotel and in the Wine Country we have rooms booked at Bosjes and the Tulbagh Hotel.
- In Cape Town and the Wine Country there will be shuttle services provided to correspond with the travel itinerary.
- Anyone going on Safari will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs. Please see The Events page for more details.
- There will be a domestic flight from Cape Town to the safari. Jason and Kim will be chartering a jet so everyone will be on the same flight. Expect the cost of transportation (airfare and ground transport) to be $300 per person. Please reach out to Jason and Kim for more details.
- You should plan to fly into Cape Town, please see the recommended itinerary.
- We suggest using a US or European airline. Most major airlines offer flights from any major US airport to Cape Town.
- United Airlines offers a direct flight from Dulles International Airport (Washington, DC) to Cape Town on October 28th.
- United Airlines offers a direct flight from Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport to Newark, NJ on November 10th.
- If you are planning to go on safari, it is strongly encouraged to fly home from Johannesburg rather than Cape Town.
No! The parts of South Africa that we will be visiting are malaria free. Unless you have unique or special medical needs, there are no vaccinations or additional medical precautions necessary.
- Our safari is being led by Andre van der Walt and Dr. Zoe Glyphis. Andre is the leading safari guide in South Africa and Zoe is recognized as the foremost big game veterinarian on the African continent south of the Equator. Jason and Kim have become good friends with Andre and Zoe since they led Jason and Kim’s first safari. Andre and Zoe will be exceptional hosts for your safari and will work tirelessly to ensure that your safari will be memorable and unlike anything that you have ever experienced. We promise they will not disappoint.
- The accommodations on safari will be extremely luxurious with all of the comforts of home. There will be staff that are willing and able to take care of your every need. You will not be camping and there will be no “roughing it.”
As long as you follow instructions you will be completely safe. You will be led by experienced professionals that have lived in, and coexisted with, the African bush their entire lives. With that said, you are guaranteed to get closer than you ever imagined to some of the largest and most impressive animals that exist on Earth.
- Cape Town is a temperate climate. In November, the average high is 78 degrees F and the average low is 59 degrees F. While it will likely be dry, you should plan for it to be sunny, with the possibility of wind and occasional rain.
- On Safari, the climate will be warm and dry. Our safari will be at the very end of the dry season. In November, the average high is 83 degrees F and the average low is 62 degrees F. It will be sunny and dry, but you may experience an occasional rain storm. The days will be hot and the nights may be cooler.
- The wedding will be formal and black tie. Men should wear tuxedos and women should wear formal dresses. We request that women’s dresses be in the champagne color palette (with or without shimmer), but gold is also acceptable. Please do not wear something that appears white or off-white. Please see below for samples of the requested color palette.
- In Cape Town and the Wine Country, you should bring casual clothes appropriate for the climate. A mix of comfortable street clothes suitable for walking around outside and fancier clothes (think: business casual) for dinners is recommended. You should also bring something warm to wear.
- On safari, your clothes should be suited for outdoor activity. It will be hot during the day and cool at night. Most importantly, your clothes should be all earth tones. None of your clothes should be bright colors, dark blue or black. Bright colors will draw unwanted attention from the animals and dark blue and black will attract flies. At night, dinners will be loosely business casual.
- We suggest you bring hiking boots or all terrain running shoes, sunglasses, hats, shorts, long pants, t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, rain jacket, at least one sweater, and a backpack.
- You should also bring the best camera you can possibly bring. The photos you take will last a lifetime!
Pro tip: it will be the dry season – bring chapstick!

- The local currency of South Africa is the Rand. The current exchange rate is approximately 1 US dollar to 18 Rand. Your dollar will go FAR in South Africa. We recommend exchanging at least some US Dollars into Rand before leaving for South Africa.
- There are many options, but we recommend TD Bank for currency exchange. We have found that TD Bank has favorable exchange rates, you do not need to have an account with TD Bank, and you can order the money online and pick it up at any branch location or they will mail it to your home. Everyone spends money differently, so budget as you see fit, but we suggest bringing at least the equivalent of $1000 USD in cash. Many locations in South Africa also accept major US credit cards.
- Please note that the Bosjes resort where the wedding will take place is cashless.
South Africa has a variety of food, but it will be largely “normal” food. Cape Town is coastal so the food will be seafood-based, with other options available. The safari will be inland so the food will be centered around land-based meat, with other options available. This will be a high-end experience, so the food will be chef-prepared and well-thought-out to compliment your daily itinerary. If you have any dietary restrictions, they can be accommodated so long as you make people aware of it ahead of time. If you want to be more adventurous in what you eat, there will be opportunities to do so. Everything Jason and Kim ate on their last trip was delicious!
Kids are great, but we kindly ask that you leave your kids at home. The itinerary, headcount restrictions, and logistics considerations mean hard choices had to be made. We hope that you will come, fall in love with the country, and use that as an excuse to come back again with your whole family!
- In Cape Town, we have made sure that everyone will have time in their schedule to plan their own adventures. Each day, our planned outings will be in the morning, leaving you free to plan excursions for the afternoons and evenings.
- Shark diving, surfing, paragliding, helicopter tours, ferries to Robben Island, and renting Shelby Cobras to drive Chapman's Peak are just some of the activities folks already have planned.
- In Wine Country, your schedule will be pretty full and outside activities will be difficult to accommodate.
- On Safari, extra excursions are strongly encouraged. A partial list of excursions offered can be found in the brochure. Please ask Jason and Kim about opportunities for other options if you have something specific in mind that is not listed.
- Please see the Events page for cost details.
- Tipping the staff is expected.
- The staff in South Africa truly want you to have the best possible experience and will move heaven and earth to ensure you have an enjoyable experience. South Africans work extremely hard, in often difficult conditions, for very little pay and do not see many Americans. Please be appreciative and set an exceptional example.
- Above everything else that Jason and Kim ask on this trip, please be nice to the staff and tip them generously.
- In Cape Town and the Wine Country, tip the service workers for your rooms, food, drinks, drivers, and anyone else who assists you.
- On Safari, most tips can be paid at the end of your stay during check out. Tips should equal between 10-20% of your total bill. If someone has given you exceptional service, especially a game driver, feel free to tip as you go along.
